The Chautauqua County
Sheriff's Office presently has two K-9 patrol units which include two deputy
sheriff handlers and three canines. The canines consist of 2 German Shepherds
and one black Lab.
Both German Shepherds
were imported from Europe. Both are used for patrol work which includes building
searches for suspects, area searches for fleeing felons or for missing persons.
The German Shepherds are also used for handler and officer protection. The
dogs are also available to all local jurisdictions and police agencies in
Chautauqua County and Western New York.
The K-9 team is called
upon frequently for demonstrations at various schools and organizations
throughout Chautauqua County. These demonstrations have become a valuable public
relations tool, especially with children.
